Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you shoot your sessions?

I have a curated list of beautiful locations that we can discuss as we work together to craft your perfect portrait session. See our recommended locations here.

At this time, we are no longer able to offer travel sessions. All sessions will be scheduled for a Knoxville area location.

When should I schedule my session?

I recommend scheduling newborn sessions for when baby will be between 7-14 days old. At this time, baby still has the fresh “newborn” look. You’ll be amazed at how fast they change! Typically baby sleeps through most of the session and we have lots of time to cuddle. I routinely shoot newborns in home up to a month old, so we can easily accommodate that if you prefer to wait.

I recommend maternity sessions to be scheduled for when you will be between 28-34 weeks along. This way your baby bump with be nice and rounded, but before you start to feel uncomfortable. Those last few weeks of pregnancy can feel very tiring. And, there is always a chance baby may be born early. My son arrived on the date of his baby shower- Complete surprise!

Baby sessions are best when scheduled around baby’s milestones- Smiling, sitting, standing and first birthday. I have found through the years that around 4 months, most babies are at a great age to capture smiles and make eye contact, and can usually sit unassisted around 6 months. Every baby is different, so I make these suggestions just as estimates. First birthdays are the best! Whether you choose to do a cake smash or a more family-centered celebration, first birthdays are a big deal around here!

Family portraits are wonderful any time of the year. Typically fall is the busiest season for families because of the mild weather and earlier session time. We do shoot primarily in the golden hour, so keep that in mind when deciding when to book your session if you have young children. Just before sunset and just after sunrise are the best times to schedule for ideal lighting.

What should we wear to our session?

This is my most asked question- And I’m here for you! I have lots of great tips that I will share with you to help you as you select items for yourself and your family to ensure that you feel great and the colors you select will work well for our setting. I have visual guides to tell you what to look for- and what to skip- when selecting clothing for your family’s portraits.

What do you do to ensure the safety of my newborn during their session?

Baby’s safety is my primary concern during your newborn session. I always remove my shoes before coming into your home and wash up completely before getting close to baby. Additionally, I will wear gloves and mask to your session if you request it. I do prefer to wrap and swaddle baby myself to ensure a tight, comfy and wiggle-free swaddle, but I’m happy to coach parents through the process if they prefer to do it.

I only pose baby in safe, natural and baby-led positions. I don’t shoot naked babies for sanitary reasons, and I will never force your baby into an uncomfortable or unsafe position. I bring minimal items to assist in posing baby for best light, and everything is very natural, soft, and has been sanitized before bringing it into your home. If you have a specific concern, please feel free to reach out to me via email and we can discuss more in depth.
